While 2024 and 2025 focused on the rise of generative AI, 2026 will be about weaving it into the web itself. The web industry is moving in two directions:

  • the invisible web, built for AI agents and automated transactions, and
  • the immersive web, designed for richer human experiences.

Here are seven shifts worth paying attention to.

1. Designing for machines, not just people

By 2028, experts predict that AI agents could handle up to 90% of B2B purchases. These won’t just be chatbots answering questions, but autonomous software making buying decisions for people.

This shift changes what websites need to offer. An AI agent searching for “accounting software under £50/month” won’t notice your hero image or read your brand story. It will scan for structured data like pricing, features, and availability. As more AI-generated content appears online, users are reacting in two different ways.

On the other hand, people are more attracted to signs of human effort. Things like retro design, first-person stories, original photos, and named authors with real expertise stand out. As generic AI content becomes common, anything that shows ‘a person made this’ gets noticed.

The best strategy is to use AI for personalisation, but also include clear human touches to give your brand a real identity.

  • Audit your machine readability. Can an AI agent parse your pricing, product specs, and availability? If critical information lives only in images or complex interactive elements, you’re invisible to the coming wave of autonomous buyers.
  • Support multiple input modes. Allow users to search by typing, voice, or image. Conversational interfaces and structured FAQs improve your chances of appearing in voice and AI-powered search results.
